In food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical facilities, the inside of the pipe matters as much as the outside. Product-contact piping must be smooth, crevice-free and cleanable to prevent bacterial harbourage. That is where orbital welding and hygienic design come in.

What is orbital welding?

Orbital welding is an automated TIG welding process in which the arc rotates mechanically around the pipe or tube. Because it is machine-controlled rather than hand-held, it produces highly consistent, repeatable, full-penetration welds with minimal internal bead - exactly what hygienic piping requires.

Why it matters for sanitary piping

Manual welds can leave internal roughness, discolouration or crevices where product residues and bacteria collect. Orbital welds are smooth and uniform inside, so the line can be cleaned in place and meets hygienic standards. We work to 3-A Sanitary and ASME BPE principles, using 316/316L tube with internal surface finishes of Ra <= 0.8 micron.

It includes correct 316L material selection, borescope inspection of internal welds, pickling and passivation to restore the corrosion-resistant passive layer, and CIP (clean-in-place) compatible layout with tri-clamp fittings and hygienic valves for easy cleaning.

What is orbital welding used for?

Orbital welding is used for food-grade, sanitary and pharmaceutical piping where product-contact welds must be smooth, consistent and cleanable. Its automated, repeatable welds meet 3-A and ASME BPE hygienic requirements.

Why is 316L used for sanitary piping?

316L resists corrosion from cleaning chemicals and product acids, and its low carbon avoids weld sensitisation. Combined with a smooth Ra <= 0.8 micron internal finish, it gives a hygienic, cleanable surface.

What is passivation and why is it needed?

Passivation is a chemical treatment (after pickling) that restores the chromium-oxide passive layer on stainless steel, maximising corrosion resistance after fabrication and welding - important for hygienic, long-life piping.
